Siege of Heaven, the wave-based tower defense mode in VR roguelite In Death: Unchained, is set to become a standalone game for Quest. Superbright CEO Wojtek Podgorski announced the plan on Discord, but did not provide a launch date. The game was not listed on the Meta Horizon Store at the time of the announcement’s report.
Podgorski said the mode has been difficult for potential players to discover because In Death: Unchained’s store presence focuses on its main experience. He also noted that the main game’s dark atmosphere and demanding controls can put off more casual VR players who might enjoy Siege of Heaven.
According to Superbright, 40% of In Death: Unchained players have tried the mode. Its archery combat does not require players to face enemies at close range or learn the game’s teleport-based navigation. The standalone release will have its own skill-based leaderboards, giving experienced players the option to begin again with the first season.
Superbright also sees the separate release as a way to reach new players and help fund its ongoing work. Podgorski said players had asked for paid DLC or another way to support the studio, but creating a new expansion would require more manpower than the team currently has. Players who already own In Death: Unchained will still be able to play Siege of Heaven there without buying the standalone version.
The separate app will also let Superbright make changes it considered too risky for the larger In Death: Unchained build. Podgorski cited a new rendering setup with Mobile HDR for richer lighting and glow, a redesigned lobby menu and new gameplay music. The announcement did not give a release date for Siege of Heaven.
